As many of my friends and family know, I have been dreaming of this business for a long time. When people would ask about the progress of my blog, I would lament: I have a lot of articles written, but I just can’t make it public yet, because I don’t have a name for the website yet! And I said this, for many months, to a lot of people.
It made me think of the roadblocks I put in my own way.
I’ll tell myself: I can’t do “X” until I finish “Y.” A lot of us do this. For example, I can’t go to that workout class until I am in better shape. I can’t start online dating until I lose some weight. I can’t start that hobby until I fix up the spare room in my house. I can’t start a family until I am in tip-top financial shape. I can’t apply for that job until I practice my interview skills and take a public speaking class. I can’t publish my blog until I think of the absolute perfect business name.
But what if we took away the “X” and just tried the “Y” – what if we imagined our life as if Y can happen and was possible right now?
On the day the “Root Rise Bloom” name came to me, I had decided to not check my phone or any social media the entire day. It was a rainy Sunday and there would be no emergencies, I assured myself. I wanted to be open to write and able to focus. I started the day sleeping in (a rarity for me these days), followed by a short personal yoga practice, and then a cup of tea with lemon. Within the first couple hours of brainstorming with my partner, I thought of the name!
I celebrated, excited to finally be able share my message and hopefully help people in the process – my primary goal. But looking back, I definitely should not have waited so long or allowed myself to put roadblocks in the way of my progress: to believe the fallacy that the “X” must happen before I can accomplish the “Y.”
Thanks for sharing this wisdom, Nina. And all the best to you with your blog, new business and new life in Denver!
